MAJOR CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS:
Licorice root contains compounds such, as triterpene saponins, flavonoids, polysaccharides, pectins, simple sugars, amino acids and mineral salts.Glycyrrhizin and some specific compounds found in licorice like glabridin and hispaglabridins A and B have antioxidant activity.
THERAPEUTIC USES:
- Cough: Decoction of yashtimadhu is consumed daily along with milk.
- Brain tonic: Powder of Yastimadhu mixed with milk consumed daily as Medhya Rasayana(Brain tonic).
- Anemia: The root is used as a decoction to treat anemia.
- Anti- epileptic:- The root of Yastimadhu is cooked in ghee with a fruit juice combination of Dhatri given to epileptic patients.

Kasa( cough), Trishna (thirst), Medhya Rasayan(Brain tonic), Kanthaya ( voice improvement ) ,Balya( strength promoting)

Licorice powder – 1 – 3 grams
Licorice decoction – 15 -30 ml
