HABITAT: Found all over India.
BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION: It is an herbaceous annual herb with an erect and woody stem. Leaves are alternative with leaflets obovate in shape and a rounded tip. The flowers occur in pairs in axils of leaves and are pale yellow in color. The pods are somewhat flattened or four angled, and sickle shaped. There are 30–50 seeds within a pod.

MAJOR CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS: Chrysophanic acid-9-anthrone, anthroquinones, chrysophanol, Emodin, obtusifolin, obtusin, chryso-obtusin, auranto-obtusin,and their glycosides.
THERAPEUTIC USES:
- Skin diseases – Paste of its seed is applied externally in skin infections.
- Burning sensation – Juice of its leaves is topically applied in case of burning sensation.
- Migraine – Soak the seeds of chakramarda in snuhi ksheera then make is paste with gomutra. Apply this paste over forehead to relieve pain.
- Teething – Decoction of its leaves is given internally in children to cure diseases occurring at the time of teething.
- Wound – Roast its leaves in castor oil and then is used as poultice to treat wounds.
