HABITAT: It is extensively cultivated in all parts of the country. Bengal, Bombay, Tamil Nadu.
BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION: A tall herb, root stalk large, ovoid, with sessile cylindrical tubers orange-coloured inside. Leaves are very large in tufts upto 1.2 metres, oblong-lanceolate, tapering to the base. Flowers in autumnal spikes, concealed by the sheathing petiole; flowering bracts pale green.

THERAPEUTIC USES:
- Hemorrhoids: Paste of turmeric powder mix with latex of arka is applied over piles mass.
- Retard facial hair growth: Applying turmeric after epilation.
- Allergic rhinitis: Turmeric with hot milk is used in empty stomach at morning time.
- Itching eyes: A cup of water, mixed with 2 pinches of turmeric is used for washing eyes to relieve itching.
- Acne & skin glow: Turmeric application on the face relieves acne and improve skin tone.
- Menstrual cramp: A pinch or two turmeric relieve menstrual cramp.
- Mood and depression: Turmeric relieve depression and regulates dopamine and serotonin levels in brain.

Pandu anaemia, prameha diabetes, vrana wound healing, visavikara poisonous, kustha leprosy, tvagroga skin diseases, sitapitta urticaria.
